I recently bought a 2016 Tacoma. Review coming shortly, I promise. For anyone considering a used Taco vs new Taco, keep in mind I paid ~32,000 for a brand new truck. Here is a similar truck - mine was a TRD Sport, this is a TRD Off-Road - that is two years old and has 30K more miles than my truck.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
WTF people?!?!? I can do this all day in my market. Can anyone sufficiently explain the Taco love tax? Why is resale so ridiculously high?

Its just like the Jeep Wranglers we were looking at a few months ago. Sometimes a brand new model was cheaper (or within $1000) of a used one with over 20k miles. It’s insane

I don’t know about your truck, but I clicked thinking this was another front of the Great Sandwich War

It’s insanity! It’s not like there’s a shortage of Wranglers being produced.

This is what we call the Tacoma Conundrum.
Also known as Subaru Syndrome.
Nobody understands it. Nobody know why these idiots are buying used cars for as much as brand new ones, but they’re doing it. They’re idiotic idiots full of idiocy.

Wow, you got in a 2016 TRD Sport for $32k? When I had the oil changed on my 2015, the sticker on ‘16s was around $38k or so. I’ve got 7k on mine, maybe I should try and sell it and make some money. Ha.
Also, pretty funny in that ad that they took pictures of the bed boxes and outlet. Ooooh!

Looks like a sport from the pics, and ads that copy past the whole brochure bug me.. Are those stock alloys? Tires aren’t stock and it looks like it may have suspension work. Not that that should increase price but it might make bros open their wallets..
Dealerships ask crazy prices - ours regularly lists 2014/2015 higher than 2016 MSRP..
I get a laugh from ads like this;
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/…
2013 with 117K blanging black wheels, running boards, and the worst iron cross bumper ever for the same as a 3rd gen MSRP.. glws

Some negotiating and ordering the truck to my specs helped a lot. The options add up fast but a manual, TRD Sport with the tow package is 33,650 MSRP.

My mom’s partner just traded a 2013 Tacoma TRD 4wd with 30k on the odo straight up for a 2013 Chevy avalanch LTZ with 30k on the odo. If it’s a luxary truck you seek, that LTZ is pretty darn nice. The chevy also has twice the horsepower, more room, and the same mpg’s. But’s it’s an avalanch so it has a very small audience.

Oddly enough I found my current-gen CPO Forester for $16,500 with 30k on it 9 months ago, while a new one has an MSRP of $23k. I thought that a pretty decent discount. Maybe because its a manual and nobody wants them? We bought our Outback new in 2013 because it made no sense to buy a used one between lower interest, 2 years of included maintenance, and a discount off of MSRP that put it within $1000 of the asking price for a 2 year old one.

It’s bonkers. There is no point to buying a used Taco.

I don’t know, but I work with a guy who buys a new Taco every 4-5 years for exactly this reason. Last one he sold was 5 years old with 90,000 miles on it to another guy here for just $4500 less than he paid for it. He took that cash and went right to the Toyota dealer and ordered a new one.

The Subaru Syndrome is a phenomenon most often observed with WRXs. Perhaps I should change the name to the WRX Complex.

Cool. Good to know. I’ll admit I didn’t look at the equipment list at the ones I browsed at, they were all in that low $38k bracket, so I figured that was base-ish. I got my ‘15 from Mountain States last year for a decent deal. It is crazy when I look and see used ones selling for what I paid, OR MORE. Silly Tacos.

+1 for “WRX Complex” lol
It is definitely worst there - especially with ‘12-14 hatches right now since there is now ‘15+ hatch or wagon. But Outbacks seem to hold their value more than they should as well. (Not that I am really complaining since I may have one to sell in about 2 years...)
Edit: Kinja replies really are borked today aren’t they.

It’s because everybody wants a wrangler or tacoma. Supply and demand being the fickle bitches they are, no deals are being made on them. Seriously, and 2010 and newer tacoma makes no sense to buy used. The new model is within 7k usually and with intrest rates for new cars being better for used, it makes more sense to get a new one. Maybe the prices will go down when gas goes up again, but who knows.

I think it is more than that. The Tacoma was/has been the highest selling mid-size for a while. Frontiers don’t have the same resale issues. Toyota makes as many of them as they can sell. When I sold cars - almost a decade ago now, WTF where did that time go - the resale value with really high back then.

Reliability I guess, one of every two midsize pickups sold is a Tacoma. Even now a decent 02 Tacoma is still hovering around 10k.
